Abundance, distribution and feeding patterns of a temperate reef fish in subtidal environments of the Chilean coast: the importance of understory algal turf RChHN

Cheilodactylus variegatus is an abundant carnivorous demersal reef fish that lives in the shallow subtidal of the north-central Chilean coast. Characteristically, these environments are dominated by kelp forests of Lessonia trabeculata. This species preys on a great variety of benthic invertebrates, and shows particularly high consumption rates on amphipod crustaceans. In our study, two widely separated populations of C. variegatus were considered (central and northern Chile). Individuals that form part of these populations show considerable differences in their distribution, abundance and trophic behavior. Comparison in waterborne Cu, Ni and Pb bioaccumulation kinetics between different gammarid species and populations: Natural variability and influence of metal exposure history ArchiMer

Kinetic parameters (uptake from solution and elimination rate constants) of Cu, Ni and Pb bioaccumulation were determined from two Gammarus pulex and three Gammarus fossrum wild populations collected from reference sites throughout France in order to assess the inter-species and the natural inter-population variability of metal bioaccumulation kinetics in that sentinel organism. For that, each population was independently exposed for seven days to either 2.5 mu g L-1 Cu (39.3 nM), 40 mu g L-1 Ni (681 nM) or 10 mu g L-1 Pb (48.3 nM) in laboratory controlled conditions, and then placed in unexposed microcosms for a 7-day depuration period. Crescimento e reprodução de Hyale media Dana (Amphipoda, Gammaridae, Hyalidae) associada à Sargassum cymosum C. Agardh Zoologia

The post-marsupial growth, sexual differentiation, fecundity and reproductive biology of Hyale media Dana, 1853 living on Sargassum cymosum C. Agardh, 1820 are described. The growth was continuous througth 12 stages for males and 9 for females. The sexual differentiation occours at 2th or 3th moult and was demonstrated by the enlargment of the gnatopod II propod. Number of eggs increased with the female head length. Observations of courtship behavior, incubation, moult processes, emergence of juveniles and brood caracteristics were made. The precopula courtship continued for two days, the eggs were incubated for six days and the juveniles, that stay until three days in the marsupium, moult every day.

Diel density variation of amphipods associated with Sargassum beds from two shores of Ubatuba, Southeastern, Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

Densities of mobile epifaunal assemblages associated with macrophytes are very variable during the day and the activity of visually-oriented predators is thought to have an important influence on this pattern. Here we compared densities of amphipods associated with a common brown alga, Sargassum stenophyllum (Phaeophyceae), at sites contrasting in water turbidity. We expected that diel variation of amphipods would occur in a shore with clear waters (Perequê), whereas no variation was expected in a shore with turbid waters (Lamberto). Drastic changes in the amphipod fauna (Crustacea) of Dutch inland waters during the last 25 years Naturalis

After the introduction of Gammarus tigrinus in The Netherlands some 25 years ago and of other recently invading amphipods (Crangonyx pseudogracilis and Corophium curvispinum) the native species decreased, the invaders increased. The success of these invaders and its impact on the local amphipod fauna is discussed. Electrophoretic tests give evidence that a second invasion of Gammarus tigrinus, this time from Germany, is taking place. Some predictions about future developments are made.

Group sweeping: Feeding activity and filtration rate in the tubiculous amphipod Haploops nirae (Kaim-Malka, 1976) ArchiMer

Haploops nirae is a gregarious tubiculous amphipod that uses its two pairs of antennae to filter particles from the water column. Recent sonar mappings of Haploops seabeds revealed that thousands of hectares of softbottom muddy sediments in South Brittany coastal ecosystems are now colonized by this amphipod. The present study investigates (1) the structure of the feeding organs and the mechanisms involved in particle capture, (2) the effect of environmental parameters (current velocity, turbidity and food concentration) on the feeding activity of H. nirae, quantified by the percentage of active individuals, the frequency of antennae beats and the number and duration of feeding events and (3) the retention efficiency and clearance rate of H. nirae...

Reproduction and food habits of the lined seahorse, Hippocampus erectus (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) of Chesapeake Bay, Virginia BJB

The reproductive and feeding biology of the lined seahorse, Hippocampus erectus, was studied in Chesapeake Bay. Seahorses are monogamous, and males incubate the eggs received from females in a closed brood pouch (= marsupium). Females do not play any parental care after mating. Total sex ratio and the operational sex ratio was strongly skewed toward females. Males and females had similar number of eggs/embryos and hydrated oocytes, respectively. The number of eggs/embryos found in the male brood pouch varied from 97 to 1,552 (fish from 80 to 126 mm TL), whereas the number of hydrated oocytes in female varied from 90 to 1,313 (fish from 60 to 123 mm TL). Role of behaviour in biological invasions and species distributions; lessons from interactions between the invasive Gammarus pulex and the native G. duebeni (Crustacea: Amphipoda) Naturalis

In attempting to understand the distributions of both introduced species and the native species on which they impact, there is a growing trend to integrate studies of behaviour with more traditional life history/ecological approaches. The question of what mechanisms drive the displacement of the freshwater amphipod Gammarus duebeni by the often introduced G. pulex is presented as a case study. Patterns of displacement are well documented throughout Europe, but the speed and direction of displacement between these species can be varied. From early studies proposing interspecific competition as causal in these patterns, I review research progress to date. Surprisingly diversified macrofauna in mobile gravels and pebbles from high-energy hydrodynamic environment of the ‘Raz Blanchard’ (English Channel) ArchiMer

Our study concerns the sampling of patches of mobile gravel and pebbles at 14 stations (25 to 66 m water depth) in an area of hard bottom located in the ‘Raz Blanchard’ (between Cap de La Hague in France and Alderney in the Channel Islands, UK). The samples collected from these benthic habitats with scattered fauna were sieved on 1-mm mesh and subjected to meticulous sorting, revealing the presence of a highly diversified mobile fauna. The epifauna and vagile macrofauna (>1 mm) account for 140 taxa (120 species, 17 genera and three other levels of identification).
